Obituary for Thomas Stoddard Johnson

Dr. Thomas Stoddard Johnson, 65, passed away October 17, 2007 at McKay-Dee Hospital due to complications with pancreatitis. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Tom was born December 16, 1941 in Tremonton, UT to Heber Guy and Emorett Stoddard Johnson. He graduated from Bear River High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Lue Smith in the Logan LDS Temple June 26, 1964. They were blessed with 5 children and 11 grandchildren.

Tom was an active member of the LDS church. He served as a bishop twice, as well as in many other callings. He let everyone know that being Primary Pianist was his favorite and the best calling in the church. He had a great knowledge of the gospel and always shared his firm testimony.

Tom loved his profession and dedicated his professional
life to the Department of Communicative Disorders at Utah State University. The faculty and students were his "family away from family." They fondly referred to him as either “Doctor Johnson” or simply, “The King”.

Tom was a True Aggie and loved to cheer on Utah State. He loved attending gymnastic meets, and was the team’s biggest fan. After Tom lost his first wife to cancer, he was able to find love again with Kathryn (Katie) Harris of Pleasant View. They were married April 2, 2004. They loved living in St. George, and enjoyed many hobbies and loved traveling together.

Tom's greatest joy in life was his children and grandkids. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. Tom always had such a great sense of humor and an awesome smile. The family would like to thank everyone for all their thoughts and prayers. They would also like to thank the knowledgeable and loving staff at McKay-Dee Hospital's ICU for their love and efforts working with Tom.

Tom is survived by his wife Kathryn and his children: Jay (Melodee), Jared (Michelle), Jann (Chad) Fawcett, Thomas (Rachel), Tailona Johnson, and the Harris children: Brett (Alicia), Chad (Angie), Brandon (Julia), Matthew (Wendy), Tyson (Karen), and Michaelene (Nathan) Kippen; a sister, Jill Cannon (Owen). He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Carol Lue; sisters Tess and Peggy; a brother Jack; and a granddaughter Gracie Harris.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Monday October 22, 2007 at the North Logan 13th ward chapel, 400 E. 1800 N. in North Logan. A viewing will be held Sunday October 21, 2007 at Allen-Cranney Mortuary from 6-8 and also on Monday from 9:30-10:30 at the church prior to the funeral services. Interment will be at 1 pm at the Smithfield Cemetery.

Tuesday 8:00PM Update

Tailona and I (Tommy) are in visiting dad right now. We talked to his nurse Tyler tonight, and things are mostly the same. The biggest news I got from our conversation is that dad's kidneys are beginning to function a little. His urine amounts are up somewhat, and some of the test are showing that the kidneys are beginning to filter out one of the toxins that dialysis doesn't pick up.

Dad continues doing dialysis daily, and today they pulled 3 liters of fluid. Dialysis is affecting his blood pressure, so they really have to ramp up his blood pressure meds during dialysis, then after, they bring it down to lower levels. If I understand everything right, the functioning kidney's will help clear sepsis (infection/toxins left from the infection) which will help his other failing organs (pancreas & lungs) return to normal, it's going to take time, but as Jay suggested this morning, "Baby Steps."

Tomorrow they may attempt to move dad from the oscillating respirator to the other respirator to measure his ability to breathe on his own etc.

Thank you for your continual prayers on behalf of our father/husband and us. We'd like to encourage all who have the ability, to attend the temple this week and keep dad in your thoughts.

Tom, Katie and Family,

We are so very grateful for the blog and admit to checking it more often than you have been posting updates. We are just anxious to hear how things are and prayerful for Tom's recovery!

You know, Tom, you need to share with more ward members the story of the hairbrush and why you are so great at the piano - the talent you share with our ward in priesthood.

We love you and Katie both so much and are so pleased with each baby step that's taken! Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers throughout the day!

We miss and love you!

Dear Uncle Tom-

You need not worry about me, I don't know about Rachel, but I always root for my USU Aggies when it comes to a BYU vs. USU game. Rachel only sits in the Aggie section because Penn State is her favorite (Nittany Lion lover), along with the Temple Owls. Little Jack is still a spitting image of his Grandpa Jack and he loves letters and numbers. We managed to take him to one of the winning Phillies games this season (obviously not the playoffs - no wins there...) Little Jack was most interested in the food, & climbing up & down the steps.

We're rooting for you and know you will pull through. You are in our prayers - we love you and appreciate you.
Love the Eastern bunch - Marc, Rachel & Jack Lowell Johnson

Tom, Kathy and Family:

Tom has continually been in our thoughts and prayers. As we are sure others have already done, we placed Tom's name on the prayers rolls of the Ogden Temple.

When Leah blesses the food when we watch her during the day while her Mother works, Leah always asks that our Heavenly Father blesses Papa Tom that he will begin to feel better. What a sweet, honest and innocent prayer from a Child of God.

Love:

Gary and Dixie Pitlo

You guy's are all so great!! It's our pleasure to keep you posted. This has been a lot easier than fielding hundreds of phone calls each day, and it's pretty interactive as well.

Go Aggies!
